Jordanian Church Hit in Deadly Funeral Ambush

Extremists targeted a Greek Orthodox congregation in Karak, leaving seven dead and 34 wounded during a funeral service.

Authorities in Jordan confirmed on Friday that at least seven people were killed and 34 others wounded after gunmen struck a church in the southern village of Hammoud. The assault occurred during a funeral procession at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate, marking a rare violent incident against the country's Christian population in the majority Sunni Muslim state.

Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the public at a press conference to detail the outcome of the shooting. He identified a group of extremists as the responsible party. The public security directorate reported that the assailants arrived in a vehicle, stepped out, and stormed the church compound before opening fire. A manhunt for the perpetrators is currently underway.

Footage broadcast by the state channel Al-Mamlaka provides a clear view of the attack. The video shows two gunmen dressed in casual clothing holding pistols, while a third individual carries a long gun. The attackers are seen firing from a street-level entrance and then advancing into the compound. This visual evidence aligns with the official account of a coordinated and sudden assault.

An eyewitness speaking to Al-Mamlaka described the scene as chaotic. The witness stated that the vehicle carrying the attackers pulled up and the gunmen fired without pause for approximately five minutes before escaping the area. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present in and around the church at the time of the shooting. Most of the victims were reported to be between the ages of 50 and 70, suggesting a gathering of older community members for the funeral.

Karak, where the attack took place, is located 110 miles south of the capital, Amman. The region is known for its significant Christian community. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani stated that security forces are actively investigating the circumstances of the attack to determine the full scope of the incident.

King Abdullah II reacted swiftly to the news, vowing the "harshest retaliation" against those responsible for the bloodshed. In a post on social media, the King emphasized the value of every citizen's life. He declared, "Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation." This strong language underscores the government's intent to project strength in the face of the violence.

The attack drew international attention, particularly from religious and regional leaders. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who is the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting as a "heinous terrorist attack." A statement from the presidency noted that Aoun said the incident "reaffirms once again that terrorism has no religion and no homeland, and its aim is to strike at coexistence and spread strife."

The region of Karak has a history of deadly violence involving armed groups. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the area. One of these strikes targeted a Crusader castle that was popular with tourists. That earlier incident resulted in the deaths of ten people, seven of whom were police officers, with dozens more wounded. Jordanian security forces eventually killed the attackers after a lengthy standoff. The current attack in Hammoud echoes these previous events, reminding residents and visitors alike of the security challenges in the southern governorate.
