EA Ends BioWare After Three Decades

The developer behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age is being dissolved as the company shifts focus to other franchises.

Thirty-one years. That is how long BioWare survived before Electronic Arts (EA) officially decided to close the doors on the studio and its Edmonton branch. In a letter sent to employees this week, EA confirmed the end of a chapter for one of the industry's most respected developers. The decision also means the early development stage of the next Mass Effect title has been canceled, bringing an abrupt halt to work that had just begun.

The studio, which EA has described as legendary, was responsible for creating iconic franchises. These include the Mass Effect series, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Other well-known titles in its history include Neverwinter Nights and Baldur’s Gate. Since EA acquired the company in 2008, BioWare became a central pillar of the publisher's strategy. However, EA has now pivoted its attention toward Battlefield, a new Marvel’s Iron Man game, and a revival of Fight Night.

The closure comes with some ambiguity regarding the future of its major IP. EA has not declared the Mass Effect or Dragon Age series dead. Nor did the company specify how many employees are affected by the change. In the letter, management stated that impacted staff would be supported as they explore other opportunities within EA. This approach suggests a restructuring rather than a complete layoff, although no specific job count was provided to the public.

Context for the decision can be found in recent performance metrics. EA noted that Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024, engaged approximately 1.5 million players during its launch quarter. This figure represented a drop of nearly 50% from the company's initial expectations. While EA did not explicitly state that this performance was the sole reason for the closure, the numbers likely played a partial role in the broader strategic reassessment.

The next Mass Effect game had been in the works for several years. It was first announced in November 2020 and teased with an official trailer that December. The release of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition remaster in 2021 kept the franchise in the spotlight. Since then, the studio had been relatively quiet. Gary McKay, the BioWare general manager, had previously noted that only a core team was working on the new game and did not require support from the full studio, as other colleagues were matched with different teams at EA.

EA is currently focusing on three main priorities: deepening its core, expanding its reach, and transforming its business. Battlefield 6 is being touted as a great success, and the company is also working on new Apex Legends modes. Under EA Sports, a project called Project Gridiron is in development. This is described as a social-first, open-world experience from the American football team. A Fight Night revival is also currently in pre-production. The company has also stated it intends to prioritize its efforts on Project Evergreen, a new installment in The Sims series.

This move aligns with a broader trend in the gaming industry where cost-cutting and consolidation are common. For instance, Microsoft announced 3,200 job cuts in its Xbox division in July, citing low margins as a primary factor. EA plans to discuss its direction and upcoming work with staff at a Global Town Hall event in November. For now, the company appears to be doubling down on its proven core franchises while refocusing its resources away from the studio that defined a generation of role-playing games.
