Tesla Confirms Cybercab Customer Deliveries By Year-End

The automaker has set a specific target for handing over its autonomous two-seater to private buyers before the end of 2026.

The wait for private ownership of the Tesla Cybercab is officially over, with the company confirming a launch date for customer deliveries.

During Tesla’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call held on October 21, executive leadership provided a definitive timeline for the fully autonomous vehicle. Lars Moravy, the company’s Vice President of Engineering, stated that Tesla is targeting the delivery of its purpose-built robotaxi to customers before the end of the current year. This announcement puts an end to prolonged speculation regarding whether the vehicle would become available to the general public in the near term or remain strictly a fleet asset.

Moravy clarified that production of the Cybercab is currently active on the assembly line at Gigafactory Texas. However, he noted that every unit rolling off that line is currently being assigned to Tesla’s internal Robotaxi fleet. The company is prioritizing its own service operations before opening the floodgates to private buyers. As the service scales, Moravy explained that the plan is to mainly deliver these fully designed autonomous vehicles directly to customers, with the Cybercab serving as the first model in this new category.

The initial phase of private sales will be modest in scope. Tesla intends to start small to allow the company to gain practical experience with several new logistical challenges. These include managing the delivery process, defining ownership models, overseeing fleet management, and operating autonomous vehicles outside of Tesla’s direct operational control. This cautious approach aims to smooth out the transition from a company-run service to a mixed ownership model.

CEO Elon Musk reinforced the idea that private sales will remain limited compared to the company's fleet. During the call, Musk described the Cybercab primarily as a 'transport-as-a-service' offering rather than a traditional personal ownership vehicle like the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. 'The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service,' Musk stated, emphasizing the vehicle's role in the shared mobility ecosystem.

The Cybercab itself is a distinctive two-seater design that lacks both a steering wheel and pedals. It relies entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software suite to operate. Production of the vehicle began in February of this year. Early units have been integrated into Tesla’s Robotaxi service since early September, when the company officially launched rides to the public. Tesla has previously indicated that it aims to price the Cybercab for sale at approximately $30,000, positioning it as an affordable entry point for autonomous transportation.

Looking beyond the Cybercab, Tesla’s Head of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, indicated that unsupervised Full Self-Driving technology is expected to ship to consumer cars during the second quarter of 2027. This suggests a broader rollout of autonomous capabilities across the company’s existing lineup following the initial Cybercab deliveries. However, early buyers or fleet operators of the Cybercab may still face geographically restricted autonomous operation. This limitation is largely due to lagging regulatory agencies that have not yet approved wider operational zones for unsupervised driving.

While the year-end target for customer deliveries provides clarity, several hurdles remain ahead of the first handovers. The company must navigate the complexities of scaling its delivery logistics and ensuring that the autonomous systems function reliably in diverse real-world conditions. As Tesla moves from an internal fleet model to a customer-centric one, the next few months will be critical in determining how smoothly the transition proceeds. The market will be watching closely to see if the promised $30,000 price point and year-end timeline hold up as the first private keys are handed over.
